Council for the Development of
French in Louisiana (CODOFIL)
The largest, most important and oldest existing Cajun activist organization, CODOFIL (Council for the Development of French in Louisiana / Conseil pour le Développment du Français en Louisiane) was founded in 1968 by a group of Lafayette-based cultural activists, including attorney and politician James Domengeaux (who served as its first president), and Canadian-born USL professor of political science Raymond Rodgers. A state-supported entity, its formal creation came about through a series of legislative acts passed in July 1968. These called for the creation of a group "to further the preservation and utilization of the French language and culture of Louisiana by strengthening its position in the public schools of the State, and [to provide] requirements that the culture and history of French populations in Louisiana and elsewhere in the Americas, shall be taught . . . in the public elementary and high school systems of the State." Although criticized early on by some observers for stressing standard French over Cajun French, and for importing French teachers from abroad instead of using local teachers, the group nonetheless has worked zealously for the preservation of Cajun culture, particularly through the teaching of French in south Louisiana's public schools. CODOFIL has often responded to perceived ethnic slurs against Cajuns, and to the ethnic group's misrepresentation by the media. Although primarily concerned with Cajun cultural issues, the group also works for the preservation of Creole culture in its various forms.
Its current president is attorney Warren A. Perrin. CODOFIL is funded by the State of Louisiana, and by donations collected by Fondation CODOFIL. It is located at 217 West Main Street, Lafayette La. 70501, and can be reached at (318) 262-5810.
In 1968, the Louisiana State Legislature created the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana in order to "do and and all things necessary to accomplish the development, utilization, and preservation of the French language as found in Louisiana for the cultural, economic and touristic benefit of the state." The Governor of the State is authorised to name the president and 50 members of the Council.
CODOFIL acts on the behalf of the state in the preparation of international accords and in the promotion of Louisiana's interests in relation with foreign Francophone governments. CODOFIL cooperates with and advises other state agencies and groups, including public education institutions and the media.
Because of CODOFIL's efforts, French is taught as a second language in the state's elementary schools. There are French Immersion programs in several parishes and the Consortium of Louisiana Colleges and Universities develops coherent polices for teaching of French at the university level.
CODOFIL supports nonprofit Francophone organizations and, since its creation, contributes to the growth of tourism by promoting Louisiana's French culture throughout the world.

Chicken and sausage gumbo is a Cajun favorite, and although available in restaurants year-round, it is particularly popular as a homemade dish during the wintertime. Making a gumbo can be time-consuming (the roux alone can take about thirty minutes to prepare), but the final product is well worth the wait. Ingredients: Roux (oil and flour) 3 14½ oz. cans chicken broth 2 small onions 1 bell pepper 3 cloves garlic 3 or 4 stalks celery ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 cube chicken boullion 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon red pepper 1 teaspoon filé (ground sasafras) 1½ lb chicken 1 sausage link (about 1 to 2 lbs) green onions rice As the saying goes, "First, you make a roux." Once this is done, in a large pot combine the cooled roux with chicken broth, then add water until the mixture reaches one inch from the top of the pot. Boil for 30 minutes, skimming occasionally to remove grease. Add chopped vegetables, and boil for another 30 minutes. Add boullion, seasonings, and meat (cut chicken, sliced sausage), and boil for 60 to 90 minutes. Serve over rice, and garnish with chopped green onions. (By the way, leftover gumbo is almost always better than freshly made gumbo.) If Cajun sausage is unavailable in your area, try summer sausage as a substitute. This recipe makes about 25 to 30 bowls of gumbo.Like this Page ?

son of Rene Chauvin and Catherine Avard de Solense. One author giving details was the famous Louisiana historian, Charles Gayarre. His book, and others listed below were in the library on Tulane Avenue, downtown New Orleans.
None of the Louisiana Chauvins are of Acadian ancestry; they all either came directly from France or from France through Canada.
John Calvin mentioned above was definitely a Chauvin from France who later changed his name and moved to Switzerland.
Some of the first Chauvin's came to Canada in the late 1500's with Hugenots and Calvinists to avoid religious "happenings" on the west coast of France at that time.
Not many christian churches today want to elaborate on the religious "happenings" during that time. "Huguenot Emigration to America", Vol. I, by Charles Baird, gives details of Henry IV sending
Pierre Chauvin from Honfleur to colonize America in 1599.
Another book, "Old Families of Louisiana" goes into details on this same Chauvin family branch. "Old Mobile" by Jay Higginbotham, describes details of the three (3) brothers in Mobile in 1709. "Kaskaskia Under The French Regime" gives details of parts of this branch of this Chauvin family at Fort Kaskasia, Kaskaskia, Illinois in 1740.
Paul Chauvin of the same family settled in the Natchez, Misissippi region and was killed in the massacre by the Natchez Indians in 1729.
Another account of this family is from "La Grande Recrue de 1653, by Roland Auger, gives details of this family in french.
Another is "Dictionaire Genealogique Des Familles Canadienes", by Abbe Cyprien Tanguay, Vol I., 1608-1700, in french. There are many other articles, too many to mention.
Hopes this helps to answer some of your questions. Henry L. Chauvin

I feel it helps explain the relative weakness of the French Navy in the important 1680-1760 era of contention with England. Thus it is of interest to historians of the period. ASSOCIATED PRESS LAS AVES, Venezuela- Explorers have found a fleet of French warships that sank in a skirmish three centuries ago, including what appear to be only the second and third pirate (sic) ships ever discovered. The nine wrecks found about 100 miles northwest of Caracas, Venezuela , during an expedition that ended Thursday are the remnants of a fleetwhose demise "changed the course of history in the Caribbeab" said mission leader Barry Clifford. "It's a spectacular find," said Clifford, who made the first discovery of a pirate ship off Cape Cod in 1984. "It was kind of like the museum of Natural History had washed up." Divers found the 70 gun, 500 man flagship, :The Terrible" featuring an 18 foot anchor with a ring large enough for divers to swim through. Coral encrusted pistols, rifles and swords were found near coins stacked likepoker chips. Rare bronze cannons and cannon shot the size of bowling balls also were found. The fleet of 35 ships carrying 6,000 men was on it's way to invade the Dutch held island of Curacao on the night of May 11, 1678, when it crashed on coral reefs about a half mile off Las Aves (The Birds) Islands. Up to 18 ships sank, 500 men drowned and 1,000 died of starvation and disease while marooned on bug-infested Las Aves. The French rescued 1,500 men three months later. Clifford goes on to say; "The French ships were lured by by three Dutch vessels who shot off cannons, provoking a chase which led the French onto the reefs, which could not be seen at night." The vessels dropped anchor in an attempt to keep from being dragged across the razor sharp reefs but succumbed to high winds and heavy seas. END The debacle devastated the French Navy and created a power vacuum that allowed the English to dominate the sea lanes in the New World. I would only comment that Mr Clifford's reference to pirate ships accompanying the French warships was following the English view. We feel they were privateers who were on a mission to extend aid to the French King in consolidating French influence. Pirates/Privateers, are in the eye of the beholder Richard Casey (Quessy) Las Vegas, NV

THANKSGIVING LOUISIANA STYLE Cajun Cochon Du Lait What are you doing Thanksgiving evening? That's Wednesday, November 20th, 1996. Will you jut be waiting for "turkey day"? Do you want to enjoy that evening --- more than you ever did? Follow me, listen closely to my story, and you'll learn about the ... CLAUSEN-MATIRNE FAMILY'S THANKSGIVING EVE CELEBRATION OR, "CAJUN COCHON DU LAIT" On Thanksgiving Eve, for the past twenty-four years in Thibodaux (Louisiana), the Clausen & Matirne Families have celebrated Thanksgiving with their friends. Because the main family celebration is a Thanksgiving Day "Cochon du Lait" (koe-shon do lay), the cooking of the pig must begin the night before. A Cochon du Lait serves-up a medium-large pig, that has been cooked over an open fire for nearly 18 hours. Just after dark, the "deceased" cochon, or pig, is carried from the refrigerated cooler into the large smoker house by the honorary "pallbearers". This large cooking smoke house is called the Cajun Microwave, and is truly the "mother-of-all-microwaves". This huge smoker is about 10 feet wide, 14 feet long, and 10 feet high. And a pecan and oak fire is kept burning all night by volunteers from the party. With all due and proper respect for the esteemed cochon (pig), a "jazz" funeral (with jazz band) is held in its honor. A eulogy is spoken for the departed cochon and a bottle of champagne is toasted to the cochon's memory. A bit of the liquid is sprinkled over the cochon, and the remainder of the bottle is ceremoniously emptied by the "pallbearers". At this point, the "mourners" who have gathered in respect for the cochon, continue on with the celebration (a la "Live & Let Die" New Orleans' Style Jazz Funeral Celebration) by enjoying the world's largest" pot of gumbo (About two feet deep and six feet across), and the "world's coldest" kegs of beer. (In recent years, the attending "mourners" have numbered from 300 to nearly 500.) By the time that each mourner has three or four trips to the gumbo pot and the beer keg, dancing begins with a Cajun band, in an old-fashioned "fais-do-do" (Cajun street dance). This amazing celebration continues until the early hours of Thanksgiving morning. The cooking smoky fire burns all night, and up until about noon on Thanksgiving. By noon, the pig is completely cooked and richly flavored with a smokey flavor. And everyone sits-down to a feast! The Clausen-Matirne Thanksgiving celebration continues to grow ever year. And no matter how long the drive (or flight) would be for you, it is definitely worth the trip to participate in the celebration. There is even a designer "outhouse" (Cajun sanitary facilities), because after all of the beer and gumbo, you won't want to miss it! I promise you that! Wouldn't it be wonderful to enjoy this traditional Cajun Louisiana event, where ever you happen to live? We'll help you to start your own family tradition! Send me your e-mail address, to receive instructions (time tested, friend and family approved) on having your own Cajun Cochon du Lait. It's even a whole lot more fun that it sounds! You'll find yourself looking forward to next year's Cochon du Lait, before your Christmas shopping is done for this year! ~A CLASSIC CAJUN FUNNY STORY~ Boudreaux, Thibodeaux, and Fontenot had just been released from the Army.
To celebrate, they decided to take a helicopter ride around Morgan City.
Thib was eating a banana. "Hmmm...I wonder....if I throw this peel out da chopper, will we gonna see it land?"
The other 2 shrugged and said "go ahead and throw it, Podnuh". They watched with anticipation, but they didn't see it land.
Fontenot had a rock.
He threw it out the chopper and said, "Dat's bigger than dat peel. We gonna see dat land." They all watched again, but nothing happened. Boudreaux pulled out a grenade, pulled the pin, and threw it.
"NOW we gonna see dat land, yeah." They watched again...nothing happened.
After the ride, they were walking home. They saw a little girl crying on the sidewalk.
"What's wrong, Cher?", Thib asked. "Well," said the girl,
"I'm just walking, me, and I slip on a banana peel wot come out from no where." They explained what had happened on the helicopter and carried the little girl home.
As they were walking along once more, they saw a little boy crying on the side of the road. "What's goin on, Tee?", said Fontenot.
"Well," said the little boy, "I was just walking when a rock hit me on my head, yeah."
The fellas again told their story and helped the little boy home
"I wonder wot happen wit dat grenade," said Boudreaux. "Me too," said Thib.
So the fellas went running down the road where they saw an old woman laughing hysterically. "Ma'am...why you laughin, huh?", said Boudreaux.
The old woman between giggles said, "Well, Beb, I jus farted and my house blew up!
